Diving off the School Board
You’ve heard it for years: get an education, do well in school, set goals. When you do this, you open up new chances for success. Success can be strictly financial: buying a home, taking a dream vacation, or retiring comfortably! It can also have nothing to do with money: getting an A on a difficult test, winning the soccer final, or having your band’s single on the radio! Knowing your options and recognizing what they may provide you is key to every person’s success.
High School Diploma: A great starting point! You need one to go on to more schooling, but having one also tells employers that you have potential and that you are able to commit to things. The job prospects available to you are increased with a high school diploma, too. If you left high school early, you can go back as a mature student and get your equivalency. It is not always viewed as exactly equal to a high school diploma, but it comes close!
College Certificates and Diplomas: College programs tend to give you information and skills that you can use for your entire lifetime, even if you don’t end up pursuing the actual career you train for. For example, you may be learning how to work in a hydro station, but you are also learning how to express yourself in speech and writing and how to grasp abstract concepts. It also can teach you many things about your place in the world and the community. Concrete, hands-on training from a college program opens up new job opportunities and usually those jobs offer more money.
University Degrees: University programs are designed to give you exceptional training for your chosen career, and teach you life skills. It is definitely a much more academic setting than even college, but still gives you additional knowledge, such as interacting with others, grasping the abstract, and communicating with people who both share and oppose your own views. Again, the higher the training for jobs, the more potential there is to earn larger salaries.
Your own definition of success is what will determine your life’s path. If income matters, the more education the better. If there are other things in your life that make you feel successful, then obviously, that is the right path for you!
